God Expects Everyone To Obey His Laws
(Passage: Matthew 15)
All people are to consider it necessary to obey God’s laws. It is also valuable to honor the doctrines (principles) that uphold the laws.
Obedience to the call to keep the laws of God leads to receiving God’s blessings. That is, God will bless us if we obey his laws.
Despite the necessity of keeping to God’s laws and honoring the doctrines that support them, humans have the tendency to misappropriate the two – Law and doctrine. If care is not taken, we can mistakenly allow doctrine to outweigh the laws. (The reverse must be the case).
If care is not taken, humans can water-down the laws of God and become overzealous about the doctrines that ought to serve as the supports.
This discussion would be better understood by considering how the Pharisees responded to the ministry of Jesus Christ (while on earth).
Pharisees- The religion sect that was passionate about God’s laws and crafted their own version (doctrine) to support them.
The doctrines created by the Pharisees were expected to be more stringent, but unfortunately, they ended up creating loopholes for people to break God’s laws.
Also, the Pharisees turned the doctrines to tools of exploiting the masses.
The Pharisees forced people to comply with their man-made rules under the pretense that they were all-out protecting God’s sacred law. Jesus revealed the true identity of the Pharisees as they have become saboteurs of God’s law.
“He (Jesus) answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition” (Matthew 15:3-6).
God’s Law Needs Our References and Compliant
God has a position that can’t be shifted by our human tradition. God’s laws have no flaws – We must comply with them.
Humans have limitations, but God is perfect. This means we are not to mistake God’s commandments for any man-made law, which is fallible.
Human laws are
